Our History

UNIFY

Everyone involved in intellectual property (IP) should work together to help ensure the best ideas get from people's heads into people's hands as soon as possible.

AMPLIFY

There are many organizations around the world doing great intellectual property work and helping a lot of people. GLIPA seeks to expand their great work and voice.

What we do?

SIMPLIFY

Organizations are implementing lots of good IP related projects and initiatives however, it is not easy to track them all. GLIPA seeks to facilitate this process by creating communications channels and platforms, pulling together the best of IP.

How we do it?

GLIPA aims to build a world where IP empowers all people to improve their lives and create a more prosperous and sustainable future. We will do this by working on IP awareness campaigns and IP education programs and by collaborating with key public and private partners. In rolling out these programs, GLIPA is strongly committed to promoting diversity and inclusion to ensure that as many people as possible have the knowledge and understanding they need to navigate the IP system effectively and leverage the value of their work

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Scott Frank, our GLIPA President, started working on Intellectual property (IP) while he was a student at Georgia State University. At that time, he saw the potential of collaborating with other classmates. He started the Georgia State Intellectual Property Advisory Board, which met with students, administration, faculty, and alums to work out how to make the university a top IP school. They created fundraising programs, mentored students, provided lectures, and organized corporate IP visits.

The board of the Alumni Association, led by Frank, then began to work with the Georgia Institute of Technology, which did not have a law school but a great engineering school.

The organization thus became much more prominent and influential (approximately 50 IP programs for students and the community over 15 years). Frank and his colleagues planned to take their project to the next level by establishing the Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA) in 2018 to strengthen the importance of IP to the knowledge economy and help drive changes in IP practice.

After the success of the ecosystem collaboration created with GIPA, Frank decided to pursue a larger dream and created the United States Intellectual Property Alliance (USIPA) in 2020 as an organization geared towards uniting IP groups, creators, and owners to drive IP awareness and education, enable ecosystem collaboration, facilitate diversity and inclusion and coordinating the efforts of other alliances formed following the successful example of GIPA.

But the vision was to take IP to everyone in the world, so in early 2022, Frank, with the support of colleagues from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), decided to take the project to a global level and joined forces to create the Global Intellectual Property Alliance (GLIPA). The alliance was launched in October 2022 following the success of its predecessors and currently counts more than 250 active members from over 60 countries, representing key actors from the public and private sectors of the world’s innovation ecosystem.

  • Yes. We signed a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2022, whose main objectives are:

    1. To collaborate in mutually supportive activities and programs that advance the global understanding and use of intellectual property (IP) to improve people's lives everywhere.

    2. Jointly organize activities that advance the global understanding and use of intellectual property (IP), through educational training programs such as seminars, events, and sessions with IP experts.

    3. Share information on global and regional opportunities and news that could further the initiatives and goals of both organizations.

    4. Disseminate educational IP materials to the public.
